How to Slow Down The Aging Process

On average we can except to live about about 75 years. Every year people are living just a little bit longer. In part this is due our success in winning the battle of child diseases as well as coming to grips with adult conditions such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Science Is making progress on how we can manage the biological aging process.

Free radicals are unstable, fragmented molecules that can damage cells. Some free radicals arise normally through digestion. Sometimes the body’s immune system produces them in an effort to destroy viruses and bacteria. There are also environmental and other biological factors that can create harmful free radicals, such as:

  • pollution
  • prescription drugs
  • cigarette smoke
  • poor exercise habits
  • stress
  • poor nutrition
  • chemicals in the food we eat
  • aging

Normally, the body can handle free radicals, but if antioxidants are not available, or if the production of free radicals is excessive, damage can occur. Free radical damage accumulates with age and can accelerate the aging process. Antioxidants stabilize free radicals and reduce their potential to damage cells and tissue.

One of the best ways to ensure that your body has sufficient antioxidant nutrients is to eat a balanced diet consisting of 5-8 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

To guard against vitamin deficiencies, plan a diet that is abundant in nutrients. Older adults require more protein and calcium in their diets than they are consuming. Low-fat dairy products are rich in calcium. To meet you protein needs eat two servings a day of 2 to 3 ounces of meat, chicken, or fish.

In our "always on-the-go way of life" we often don't get all the nutrients we need. If this is the case for you then I recommend taking nutritional supplements. Taking whole food nutritional supplement with no known side effects, is another sound way of assuring proper antioxidant nutrition. Research Validates Efficacy of Glucosamine and Chondroitin For Treating Osteoarthritis

Below is an abstract of an article that reports on recent research done by the National Institute of Health (NIH) concerning the use of glucosamine and chondroitin for the treatment of moderate to severe knee pain.

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 14, 2005 /PRNewswire/ -- Initial findings of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) conclude that a, "combination of glucosamine and chondroitin is effective in treating moderate to severe knee pain due to osteoarthritis (OA)."

The results from this groundbreaking multi-center trial were presented today in its entirety at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and give hope to the 35 million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis. GAIT tested whether glucosamine and chondroitin used separately or in combination, and in comparison to placebo and celecoxib, are effective in reducing pain and improving functional ability in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Jason Theodosakis, M.D., a member of the steering committee for the $14 million NIH study, concludes: "The supplements glucosamine and chondroitin offer effective treatment to the millions of Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis. One very significant finding of GAIT is that the supplements actually outperformed the prescription drug for those with moderate to severe knee pain thus offering relief for those who need it most."

Tired of That Stubborn Hacking Cough?

An annoying tickly throat and stubborn hacking cough accurately describe bronchitis. Bronchitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the bronchi, which make up the primary airways of  the lungs. Bronchitis will usually clear up within a few days if the heart and lungs are healthy. This disorder commonly occurs during winter months and can appear more serious than it really is. Chronic bronchitis is a different, more serious disorder, usually resulting from prolonged smoking. Continual attacks  of chronic bronchitis will cause the lungs to deteriorate.

Self Care Tips:

  • Don't smoke or be around people that does
  • Cough medicines should be used sparingly
  • Cough drops can help alleviate the tickly  feeling that prompts coughing
  • Cold mist from a vaporizer or humidifier is recommended
  • Apply a heating pad to the chest for 30 minutes.
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages
  • Eat hot, spicy foods
  • Citrus juices are recommended, along with a diet high in raw fruits and vegetables
  • Barley water in combination with lemon juice can help relive bronchiole spasms
  • Drink hot lemon juice with ginger
  • Take Vitamin A, C, and E
